Young Marble Giants
Colossal Youth
Colossal Youth is the legendary debut album by Young Marble Giants; an album that has influenced the likes of Nirvana and Belle & Sebastian with its paradoxical combination of abstract, sparse electronica and warm, intimate introspection.
The album is defined by its sparse arrangements, featuring Alison Statton’s "deadpan" vocals, Stuart Moxham’s guitar/organ, and Philip Moxham’s bass. Instead of a live drummer, the band used a home-made drum machine.
It was recorded in just five days at Foel Studios in Wales with minimal overdubbing and mixing that took only about 20 minutes per track.
Despite initial cult status, it became a major influence on artists like Kurt Cobain (who named it one of his 50 favorite albums), Courtney Love, and Belle & Sebastian.
