Release date: Jan 1, 1999, US
Released in October 1999, Run Devil Run is the eleventh solo studio album by Paul McCartney. It is primarily a collection of rock and roll covers from the 1950s, recorded as a "back to basics" project following the death of his first wife, Linda McCartney, in 1998.
The album features high-energy rock 'n' roll and rockabilly. It includes 12 covers of both famous and obscure songs by artists like Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent, and Chuck Berry, alongside three McCartney originals: "Run Devil Run," "Try Not to Cry," and "What It Is".
McCartney assembled a "supergroup" of seasoned musicians for the sessions, including:
David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) on guitar.
Ian Paice (Deep Purple) on drums.
Mick Green (Johnny Kidd & the Pirates) on guitar.
Pete Wingfield and Geraint Watkins on keyboards.
To capture a raw, live feel, McCartney insisted on recording the songs quickly at Abbey Road Studios with minimal rehearsals and no post-production overdubs.
The title was inspired by a brand of bath salts (intended to "ward off evil") that McCartney saw in a voodoo/herbal medicine shop called Miller’s Rexall Drugs in Atlanta, Georgia.
To promote the release, McCartney returned to his roots by performing the album almost in its entirety at the Cavern Club in Liverpool on December 14, 1999.
