Release date: Jan 1, 1989, Canada
Released on September 19, 1989, Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 is the fourth studio album by American singer Janet Jackson. It is a landmark concept album that shifted from the personal themes of her previous work to address sociopolitical issues like racism, poverty, and substance abuse.
It is the only album in history to produce seven Top 5 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. It also scored number-one hits in three separate calendar years (1989, 1990, 1991).
Created with legendary duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the album pioneered the New Jack Swing sound—a fusion of R&B, funk, hip-hop, and industrial percussion.
The number represents the year "The Star-Spangled Banner" was written (1814), reflecting the album's theme as a new "national anthem" for a unified nation. Coincidentally, "R" is the 18th and "N" is the 14th letter of the alphabet.
