Def Leppard
Hysteria
Hysteria is the definitive Def Leppard album—a 1987 masterpiece that redefined arena rock with its glossy production and relentless string of hits. Conceived by producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange as a hard-rock version of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, the goal was for every track to be a potential single.
It is the band's best-selling album, moving over 25 million copies worldwide.
The "Hysteria" Seven: The album spawned an unprecedented seven hit singles, including:
"Pour Some Sugar on Me" (the band's signature anthem)
"Love Bites" (their only US #1 single)
"Armageddon It," "Animal," "Rocket," "Women," and the title track "Hysteria".
It’s famous for its meticulous "piecemeal" recording style where guitars were often recorded one note at a time to create a "wall of sound".
The album's title was suggested by drummer Rick Allen, reflecting the media "hysteria" following the 1984 car accident that cost him his left arm. It was also the final studio album to feature guitarist Steve Clark before his death.
