Ray of Light is the acclaimed seventh studio album by American singer-songwriter Madonna, released on February 22, 1998, by Maverick Records. It is a landmark album that is credited with introducing electronica into mainstream pop culture and is considered one of the greatest pop albums of all time.
The album marked a major stylistic departure, blending genres including electronica, trip hop, techno-pop, and new-age music. Mystical and spiritual themes, influenced by Madonna's study of Kabbalah, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Ashtanga yoga, are strongly present in the music and lyrics.
Madonna teamed up with producer William Orbit, and the recording process involved working with samples and synthesizer sounds rather than traditional live musicians. Madonna's vocal performance on the album was highly praised, a result of the vocal lessons she took for her role in the film Evita.
Success and Recognition Ray of Light was a massive commercial and critical success, selling over 16 million copies worldwide and topping charts in 17 countries. It won four Grammy Awards from six nominations, including Best Pop Album and Best Dance Recording for the title track.
