Laughter is the third studio album by Ian Dury and the Blockheads, originally released on November 28, 1980. It marked a significant transition for the band, as it was the final studio album Dury recorded for Stiff Records and his last with the Blockheads until their 1998 reunion for Mr. Love Pants.
The album was recorded during a period of internal tension. Songwriting partner Chas Jankel had recently left the group and was replaced by former Dr. Feelgood guitarist Wilko Johnson.
While still retaining some of the band's signature "disco" and funk-infused pulse, Laughter shifted toward a more guitar-driven pub rock and new wave sound.
Dury described the title as ironic, stating, "I called it 'Laughter' to cheer myself up". Many tracks deal with personal struggles, including his experiences with polio ("Hey, Hey, Take Me Away") and depression ("Fucking Ada").
