Donuts is a critically acclaimed instrumental hip-hop album by the late American producer and rapper J Dilla (James Yancey). Released on February 7, 2006, his 32nd birthday, it is widely considered his magnum opus and one of the most influential hip-hop albums of all time.
The album contains 31 short, sample-heavy tracks that run together like a continuous mix or a radio scan, a format that began as a demo beat tape. It gained particular poignancy as it was released just three days before J Dilla's death from a rare blood disease. Much of the album was created while he was in a hospital bed at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, using a Boss SP-303 sampler and a portable turntable.
