Miles Davis
Sketches Of Spain
Sketches of Spain is a critically acclaimed 1960 studio album by American jazz musician Miles Davis, released by Columbia Records. The album is a pivotal "third stream" recording, blending jazz, European classical, and Spanish folk music, arranged and conducted by Gil Evans. It is the third of Davis's collaborative projects with Evans, following Miles Ahead (1957) and Porgy and Bess (1958).
The music is less improvisational than much of Davis's other work, focusing on orchestral textures and melodies. The album's creation was inspired by Davis's fascination with Spanish flamenco music after attending a performance and buying a collection of flamenco records.
Sketches of Spain is often cited as one of the greatest jazz recordings of all time. It is celebrated for its lush orchestration and Davis's emotive, restrained trumpet playing.
