The Isaac Hayes Shaft soundtrack is a landmark double album of 1970s soul and funk, famous for its iconic "Theme from Shaft". The album is widely available on CD, vinyl, and digital streaming platforms, often in remastered or deluxe editions.
Released in July 1971 on Stax Records' Enterprise label, the album features music composed by Isaac Hayes as the score for the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer blaxploitation film Shaft. It was a massive commercial and critical success, peaking at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and winning a Grammy for Best Film Score. The hit single, "Theme from Shaft," earned Hayes the Academy Award for Best Original Song, the first time an African American composer had won an Oscar in that category.
Critics praise the album for its tight, funky grooves, cinematic instrumentation, and Hayes' characteristic deep vocals and lush arrangements. The album primarily consists of instrumentals, with three vocal tracks, including the nearly 20-minute long "Do Your Thing"
