Ø
Sysivalo
Sysivalo is the title of the final, posthumous album by the pioneering Finnish electronic musician Mika Vainio, released under his long-running alias Ø. The title is a Finnish word invented by Vainio, combining the terms "sysi" (dark or sinister) and "valo" (light).
The album was mostly finalized by Vainio before his untimely passing in 2017 and compiled posthumously by his former partner and a friend according to his notes.
The title, a portmanteau of "dark" and "light," reflects the album's mood, which carries a quiet darkness counterweighted with "glimpses of the sublime".
The album is composed of 20 tracks, many of them shorter pieces or "etudes". Reviewers note that Vainio, an artist often more interested in sound details than melody, created music of "such grace and lyricism" in this work.
