Richenel
L'Esclave Endormi
"Richenel l'esclave endormi" is the title of a song and EP by the Dutch singer Richenel (Hubertus Richenel Baars), released in 1986. It is not a book, story, or a specific historical figure, but a musical work.
It was originally a Dutch single, but was licensed and re-released with an extended remix version on the British independent record label 4AD.
The 4AD founder, Ivo Watts-Russell, was impressed by Richenel's "lush ethereal vocals" and subsequently invited him to contribute vocals to the second This Mortal Coil album, Filigree & Shadow.
The song is known for its moody, rich sound and fit well with the ethereal aesthetic of the 4AD label during that era.
Richenel passed away in March 2020 at the age of 62.
