Red Hot Chili Peppers
Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Blood Sugar Sex Magik is the fifth studio album by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, released on September 24, 1991. It was a monumental breakthrough for the band, propelling them to international superstardom and cementing their place in alternative rock history.
A defining album in the funk-rock genre, it also incorporates elements of funk metal, rap rock, and alternative rock.
Rick Rubin, who would go on to produce many more of the band's most successful albums, was brought in for the first time on Blood Sugar Sex Magik. The collaboration resulted in a raw, stripped-back sound that was a notable shift away from the heavy metal guitar riffs of their previous album, Mother's Milk.
he band famously recorded the album in a reportedly haunted mansion in Los Angeles during a highly creative and productive two-month period. A documentary titled Funky Monks was filmed during the sessions.
The album peaked at number three on the US Billboard 200 and has sold over 14 million copies worldwide. It is the band's second best-selling album, after 1999's Californication.
