Release date: Aug 11, 2017, Europe
Released on September 22, 1992, Broken (also known as Halo 5) is the first EP and second major release from the industrial rock project Nine Inch Nails. It marked a significant departure from the synth-pop sound of their debut, Pretty Hate Machine, pivoting toward a much heavier, aggressive industrial metal style.
The EP was born out of a bitter legal battle between Trent Reznor and his original label, TVT Records. Reznor recorded the material in secret under the alias "Stunt Popes" to prevent the label from confiscating it.
Despite its abrasive nature, the EP was a commercial success, reaching No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and achieving Platinum certification. It earned two Grammy Awards for Best Metal Performance: "Wish" (1993) and "Happiness in Slavery" (1996).
